Lead up to the 5th Review

It's weird. Have you ever noticed when you just purchase an item or start on a new project, that for some reason or another, you start tuning into it? I mean everywhere! It's as if there's a magnet in your brain that just attracts information! I wish that worked for everything in my life, then I'd know exactly what to focus in on and bring it! Maybe, that's what the Secret is all about. I say this because lately, I've been noticing a lot more Burger talk than ever before! Everywhere! In private conversations. On advertisements. Radio. TV. Print. And yes, even on the Internet! Maybe it's because Summer is here and Burgers seem to be the Go-To(preferred) Meal of choice, for the season. The Burger Chatter is definitely amp'd up! This new found magnetic knowledge has bolstered and strengthened my resolve in this Quest! Sometimes we are called upon to participate in a mission that is bigger than ourselves. This is such a mission. Doctor's, Lawyers, Burger Reviewers, whose to say which is the most important? All I know is I'm in this for the long haul. Will I gain a few pounds in the process - probably. But, I knew that going in. I'm taking one for the team!

Perhaps at the end of my journey this can be said about me, because like Ghandi, I'm on a Quest that is bigger than me. The Quote:

"Generations to come will scarce believe that such a one as this ever in flesh and blood walked upon this earth."

Pretty appropriate, huh?


Again, I digress. During the Summertime Burgers are done at all sorts of places - the Beach, The Park, The Backyard, Terraces, Patios etc. The occasional one might be quite good but rarer still - even Exceptional. If I found an outstanding Burger at any of these places - I wouldn't be able to report on it. Just because it couldn't be duplicated - I would have to scratch it off as a One-Off occurrence. Because of that, I'll limit my findings to places that are accessible and within reach of most people.

My Fourth Review - The Red Onion

So on a nice sunny evening, I wound up at the Red Onion on West 41st Avenue near West Boulevard (Arbutus). I like this area, it's very clean and relaxed. No real hustle and bustle, just a nice slow-paced area.


As I've said earlier, I've been here in the past, but this time I'll be watching and paying attention to things I normally wouldn't. Again, I'm risking my future happiness with these burger places for YOU people!



In their menu they've got a blurb about themselves that you may find interesting & informative. The one that I focussed on was - the Best Burger Award! I'd never thought about putting it to the test - until now!



I can't disagree with some of those statements they've bulleted. So we're off to a good start! I ordered a Coke. Bottomless, of course. It was a decent mix.


Next up was the Main reason to be here, the Burger! I ordered it with Bacon and Cheddar Cheese. As burgers go, it's not as low cost as they seem to think it is. 3 Bucks for toppings, seems kinda steep, we'll just see if it's justified. I didn't order anything else - no fries, no salad, nothing! 



While waiting for the meal to arrive, I took a few pictures and checked out the decor of the place.


I tend to eavesdrop on conversations close by. After all, if people wanted their conversations confidential they wouldn't be having them in public, now would they? This was a good one to listen in on, considering what my purpose was. One of the folks was telling everyone that The Red Onion is probably THE BEST place to come to for a REAL BURGER! For a good all-out burger this was THE PLACE TO BE! He followed it up with a suggestion for another establishment that,he says, does a phenomenal job with burgers as well - I won't mention that name as of yet, but suffice it to say - I've been there and I was NOT impressed by it - in fact I was downright disgusted! I'll tell you the details when I delve back into that hell hole for a future review. He lost a ton of credibility with that statement - for now that is! Because, as you know, this is an opportunity for me to look at these burgers with a fresh set of taste buds! And, there is a possibility that the OTHER Burger Joint may have redeemed itself!

It's quite nice. Sometimes it's impossible to get a seat! We lucked out, it wasn't very busy that evening. Finally the meal arrived. They used to wrap the burgers in foil. The Burger looked good and the smell of the place really added to the experience! I love the smell of fried onions on a grill!



I picked it up, and boy did it feel hefty. Nice weight to it - it implied satisfaction by the shear size of it. Then I took the first bite. I tasted mustard and lots of it! Not only is the sauce they use mustard based - but on the other side of the burger they apply more mustard! I don't think I ever noticed this before. It was actually quite strong and overpowering! The cheddar cheese they use is shredded, then tossed on the burger. I started remembering how much of the cheese would be lost in the wrapper from the unmelted pieces! That always bothered me. The patty itself was good. It's unusual for a burger to have the veggies on the bottom bun and the patty on the top bun, but thats how it came. I realized it was probably better that way, since the bottom bun started breaking up within 2 bites. Now I understood the wrapper! To keep it together and collect all the loose cheese droppings. Cheesy droppings, hmm, there's something wrong about saying cheesy droppings!



The way I used to eat a burger was - I would pick it up with both hands and not let it out of my hands. I guess the reason was to avoid problems like these. So I reverted to my past, After that last picture, I picked it up and kept eating it, suffering with the mustard taste and trying to dissect the burger in my mouth. Periodically, I would rest my elbows on the table while I chewed and took a breather. This allowed me to gather my thoughts. It was an ok burger. Yes, just an Ok Burger not even close to great. Mustard to me is what pickles are to others. I've tried hard over recent years to work on this. After all, so many people love mustard - there must be a reason for this. I've finally come to a point where I can tolerate it and a few times even appreciate the yellow condiment. This, however, was too much and it reminded me why I didn't care for it in the past!

Then it was time for the bill. It always comes with a Red Onion. You are free to take it with you! I never have. But, it's a nice touch to remember a place by.



One time my mother had come to The Red Onion with a friend of hers, they went in for the fries. This place is known for their fries and dip. They're actually quite good and usually a bit of a handful. She had brought home the Red Onion! It seems to leave a impression on people. More places should give you something as a parting gift.



Will you find the Most Satisfying Burger Experience at The Red Onion?

No.

What you will find is a good burger with a bit of a charry taste. If you love mustard, this would probably hit the spot for you. The service is good. The decor was good, the atmosphere was good.

Sadly, the Burger was NOT good & did not live up to it's award winning claim. I found it to be way too mustard-dy. The bread broke down real quick - partly because it wasn't toasted or anything and quite dry. It was a boring Burger! Overall the food left me wanting - wanting to leave and not try their burger again! That's quite the statement, something I will always remember, especially when someone suggests going to - the Red Onion!

The Burger Blog has spoken. Onward and Upward and Outward to the next Burger Place!

Lead up to the 4th Review

This one wasn't planned to do next - it just happened. I'd been to this place several times in the past. It's always been a good stable fairly consistent place to do my burger eating business in. It was always a bit out of the way, but that was probably always part of the charm of this eatery.

I'd always regarded it as a fairly higher end place to go with an old time diner feel to it. The sights and sounds of the open grill as they prepare your food was always a nice feature of coming here.

The Place? Well it's the Red Onion!

Let's see if this new way of 'doing' burgers will change my feelings about this place as we continue the search for the Most Satisfying Burger Experience... ever...

My Third Review - Red Robin

So I found myself at Red Robin on a Monday evening, nothing had changed on the outside since I was last there.


Then again, unless they moved, there probably wasn't much they could do.


Nothing had changed inside either. I'm thinking that there probably wasn't any reason to. This is probably the nicest Red Robin that I've been to.




Being from East Van, it's probably the most convenient as well!




I guess when you have a pretty good set-up and it works, why mess with it huh? Well I wish they would have done the same with the menu. I always hated when they would try and seat me in one of their small booths. I'm not the biggest guy on the planet, but I'm not so small that I can fit comfortably in those baby booths!

The waiter came to take our order.
I asked for a Coke.
He asks, "Is Pepsi ok?"
My response, "I'll have water then."
The waiter had a nervous chuckle.
I've done this before, If I wanted Pepsi, I'd ask for Pepsi.

When I was a kid, I always preferred Pepsi. It was so sweet! It probably made it difficult to handle me as a youngster as I was always bouncing off the walls! As I've grown older, my preference has shifted towards  Coke. It seems to be the Big Boy Drink. You never hear people asking for a Rye & Pepsi or Rum & Pepsi, do you? Coke seems to have a stronger bite to it. The waiter came back with the drinks and I had settled on my order.

I had zeroed in on the Big Claim! I just had to have it!


I do like the way they've laid out the menu. It tells you clearly what's on it and gives you the choices of cheese. What I'm really looking for, in this all important search, is that elusive perfect combination of ingredients. I do not want to go into a place and tell them what I want on it! If i wanted that, I'd make it myself at home. Give me as little to do as possible. I just want to come in, select off of their menu - AND be completely satisfied! I didn't like the fact that they were asking what kind of cheese I wanted, however, since cheeses vary so much, I found this perfectly acceptable since there is no way that I would have liked Bleu Cheese on my burger! Well, not so early on in this search! So I selected Cheddar Cheese. I substituted the fries for Caesar Salad. 

The order came! It looked and smelled delicious! I nibbled a bit on the Caesar salad and found it to be a bit dilly for some reason. I did enjoy it, since I love the flavour and aroma of dill. I washed my palette with a few sips of water. I picked up the hefty burger and wow, it looked great! Assembled nicely, good proportions. Everything looked and smelled fresh. It was almost a shame I was about to devour it! I took a deep slow breath and bit into it. OMG! It was delicious! I started thinking damn! This seems to be living up to its claim so far! I started concentrating on the individual ingredients, I had to figure out if something is being masked or is not up to par. I didn't want my search to end so soon, then I thought, well this could be setting the bar unreasonably high for all the other burger joints, but it wouldn't end my search! The texture and combination of the ingredients was pretty damn good! The beef seemed to melt onto my palette, the bacon was incredible, the lettuce was great (no more nuking smell or taste or wilted texture), the cheese was melted super smooth and complimented the beef perfectly. 


Then it happened. I started dissecting the Burger. The bun could probably have been toasted a little more, the mayo on the top bun could use something, it was a little bland, then the other shoe dropped - the tomato! The center of the tomato was raw! It was hard and bland, I went from the most excited I'd ever been about a burger to a state of mild disappointment. Why Red Robin, why? Why have you forsaken me? I took it as a sign that the Burger Gods didn't want my search to end so fast!


So close, and yet so far! Then it was time for the bill. The waiter didn't ask if we wanted separate bills or if we wanted it all on one. He presented us with 2 bills. Mine was wrong, I wasn't the one with the soft drink. I was the one with the water. This isn't really a big deal, but at the same time, it has the potential to create 'a situation' between diners. It can make it awkward or seem petty for someone to bring up the fact they didn't have a beverage or something else. Depending on the individuals it could create tension unnecessarily. It's important to get the billing right!


In summary, Red Robin has come a long way. I never would have ordered this Burger in the past because I've always ordered ones with a kick or a bite to them. Well this one definitely gave my tastebuds a kick in the right direction! I definitely recommend The Red Robin Bacon Cheeseburger!

This is the reason I am on this Quest - to try something I normally wouldn't and to let people know where they can go without disappointment! Even thought it fell short of the Most Exceptionally Satisfying Burger Experience, I don't think you can go wrong with this one!

Lead up to the 3rd Review

So here I am, ready to post my next review. I actually reviewed this place 2nd, the day before I was to do the White Spot review. So being true to my word, I posted the White Spot review first!
My next victim/saviour? Red Robin.
Out of high school we used to go Red Robin quite often. In that short period of time, they went from being one of my favourites to one of my least favourites. I used to love their Blackened Cajun Chicken Strips and their Cajun Burger!
My preference has always been to go for foods with a bit of a Kick to them! Maybe it's the Indian in me. I prefer spicy, but not too hot! People tend to confuse the two. One is flavourful and adds to the experience in a pleasureable way. The other just provides a burning sensation. You pay for it during and after the meal - if you know what I mean. A little of the hot stuff is ok, if you get too much - well then it just overpowers and destroys your tastebuds. In some cases spicy/hot foods can make your nose runny, give you hives, nausea, trouble breathing, making you cough and choke. That's not my idea of a good meal!
I digress, so anyways as most proper Burger Joints go, the drinks are bottomless. At a few of the Burger Spots - the fries are bottomless as well! I had actually forgotten about this, but Red Robin used to have wedge shaped fries that were bottomless. I actually preferred those! Right now, I can only think of one place that still does the wedge shaped fries, but I won't mention them right now, I'll save that for a future review.
Red Robin used to actually have a really great product and were very consistent. Then all of a sudden they took a real nosedive! The food tasted like it was microwaved! Nobody likes warm, soggy, nuked tomatoes and lettuce! That smell is disgusting! So every time someone wanted to there, I would always suggest somewhere else - and not even give it another try.
Eventually, I went back after like a 6-8 year hiatus! The items that were my favourites, got the old heave-ho! I've taken my mother to Red Robin a few times. She, being a vegetarian, has a limited choice when eating out. I ordered the Onion Rings for her, and they came stacked! She was so impressed, she's taken several of her friends there! So has Red Robin made a full recovery? Let's find out shall we?

Time to continue in the saga to find the Most Exceptionally Satisfying Burger around!

My Second Review - White Spot

As I mentioned previously, this review will be the Legendary Burger at White Spot, a BC Staple for years. They've provided memories over the years growing up. My mom used to take us there as children and I still remember eating the Pirate Paks. The shakes they had were absolutely delicious and probably one of the first places I can remember getting the leftover shake mix in the metal container! It was no wonder I was always hyper as a kid - all that sugar! Mmm! Mmm! Mmm! Even as a kid after having a Pirate Pak, my mom would ask if I wanted anything else - and I still had room for the Shake. Chocolate of course! I always wondered how I was able to pack away so much food, I must have had a good metabolism as a child. Too bad I couldn't save it up for my later years - like now! I'm actually sighing thinking about that!

Sidenote: About 7 years ago, I had all 4 of my wisdom teeth pulled. After leaving the dentist, I went straight to White Spot! I had a Legendary Burger with bacon and cheese and a side of Potato Dill soup. That soup was the best I ever had! I've never had that soup since. It amazes me, when someone has a great product, how reluctant they are to put it on the regular menu. Another thing I'd like to mention is that over the years White Spot has been playing around with their menu, way too much for my liking. They've made a concious effort to attract a different crowd into their restaurants. They did an excellent job with the Triple - O's out there! A stand-alone fast food restaurant. They however are alienating individuals like me, by constantly playing with their menu. When I go to White Spot I want the old White Spot menu, I don't want some fusion foods! If they want to attract a different crowd, they would be well advised to start another restaurant with a different name. They had a great product and seem to be losing their way. I used to go to White Spot at least twice a month, now it's probably more like once every 3-4 months. So White Spot, please get back to what made you successful. Good simple foods at good prices with great service!

Since this blog is about stretching myself mentally and going in directions and actions I wouldn't normally go in, I decided I would go to a White Spot I had never been to! This was actually a harder task than I thought. I checked out their website and went down the locations list. I had been to all the ones in Vancouver, Richmond, and Burnaby - even the new one at Marine and Byrne Road. That just goes to show you how much of a staple it's been for BC'ers! The closest one I had not been to was in North Vancouver on Lonsdale. I made my way over the bridge and saw the familiar sign. I was home.

I went inside and was greeted very nicely and seated immediately. I found the Manager/Host to be very friendly. it was calm and not overly busy. Set a nice relaxed tone.



My server came along shortly and I asked for a Coke. By the time she was back with it, I was ready to place my order. My unwritten rule for this search is to take the item as it is seen on the menu - with no modifications. However I've decided, I'm going to allow myself a small amount of modification in the form of cheese and/or bacon from time to time.


I was asked if I wanted to add cheese to the burger. I said yes. The accompaniment to most burger meals is fries. White Spot has the Kennebec Fries. Bottomless to boot. They're not bad, but for the past 10-15 years I'd say, I've tended to substitute a Caesar salad for fries at most establishments. Another note - at some of the White Spots - they will give you Frozen McCain's Fries! Since this blog isn't about the fries, I'll say this substitution is allowed.

As the wait started for the Legendary Burger with Cheese to arrive with Caesar instead of fries, I took my cold glass in hand and noticed that it was badly scratched up. It didn't affect the taste or anything, but it took something away from the experience. It was so badly scratched up that someone might actually mistake it for being dirty! The mix was good though. And of course, it's bottomless!
The meal arrived as pictured below.


One thing I never really liked about White Spot is the placement of the Pickle Slice on top of the bun. Sometimes you would find that the slice was a bit juicy and run down the bun. I just happen to love dill pickles, but I do know for some people that they can't stand it's overpowering ability and would prefer to do without it. I always liked the crease in the bun, if you ever felt like cutting it in half, this actually helped a bit! The plate looked pretty boring and empty without the fries and coleslaw.
Another thing that bothers me is the wasting of 2 dishes, there was more than enough room for the salad to be on the plate! I'm guessing the salad is easier to prepare ahead of time in a separate dish. Another advantage could be that it prevents moisture from the salad from running into the bun and soiling it. And most people don't like soiled buns. I say most, because, well - each to their own! I cupped the top bun and inserted my pickle into it! It was slippery! Just like Nelly would sing "It's getting hot in herrrre..."

I could probably count on 2 hands the number of times that I've cut a hamburger in half to eat! I decided to partake in this royalest of traditions.

I am not an animal! I'm sophisticated, I'm classy, I'm... oh, who am i trying to fool? I'm hungry!

I sampled the salad a bit as I visually took in the burger before me. I contemplated my attack. I sized it up. I thought about it as I inhaled it's aroma. It looks a little boring, doesn't it? Well that Triple-O sauce had a monumental task! As with most White Spot products there's usually more than enough of it! I like the sauce, but I don't need to bathe in it!

I take the first bite. The sauce oozes out. It's starts to overpower, but then the pickle takes over. The pickle completely overpowers the burger into submission. The patty isn't very big or thick. I remembered at this point why I would usually order the double double. It definitely needs more meat. (Yes, the option is there to make it a "Bigger Burger" - and I didn't take it!) It is way out of proportion to the bun and the sauce! I'm glad I added the cheese. It definitely helped neutralize some of the flavour of the Triple - O sauce and provided a nurturing soft texture. It was good, not great, but definitely good!

Quite simply, if you're in BC you have to try the burger at least once! It's a good base to start with. The patty was good quality. My complaint as you've probably guessed is that it's so small and thin. The burger needs more substance to it. This is probably as basic a burger you'll find. A bun, a thin patty, some mayo and some Triple O Sauce with a pickle outside. Everything else is extra!

The service at this White Spot was excellent. The staff was very attentive and did regular rounds. They paid attention and served with a smile. They didn't just ask if I wanted a refill, they said they would be back with one! Very friendly. It's probably one of the best reasons to go to White Spot.


Will you find the Most Exceptionally Satisifying Burger at White Spot in the form of the Legendary Burger? Definitely not! What you will find is a good decent burger. Not complicated at all. Good quality. No bells and whistles - just a patty layered with slippery stuff.
I would suggest ordering this burger with cheese, half the sauce or sauce on the side. Don't add the pickle. It will completely overpower the burger itself. The light bun will leave you hungry for something else. You'll definitely have room for dessert. Can I suggest, a Chocolate Shake?

Another one bites the dust and doesn't hit the spot completely! Enjoy...

Just a few thoughts...

You know it's actually pretty cool doing these reviews. I'd like to say a few things before I start this one. This whole process is really a work in progress. I have no idea what form or shape and direction this will take me off in. These are my thoughts as I go on this epic adventure.

A friend mentioned that while looking for my blog, he found some others and told me some of the ratings they gave on some burgers around town. I was actually pretty surprised to learn one of my favourites in the past was rated quite low by one reviewer. It just goes to show you, that everything is subjective. That's the great part of this process - there is no Right or Wrong! It's all my opinions! For me this is a way to keep a written log of what I've eaten and truly look at one of my favourite entrees, the Burger, with a fresh set of taste buds. My favourites in the past may no longer be considered my favourites in the future! I'd like to add that I'm not planning on coming up with a scale for rating the burgers. Perhaps I'll keep a running tab of the top 10 Burger Experience Places in town, that is as soon as I've done over 10 places. This is because what I'm really looking for is...

The Most Exceptionally Satisfying Burger!

This would probably mean something different to everyone. Did everything click for me, from start to finish, for that meal to make it a Truly Exceptional Experience? This exercise will help me to conciously enjoy my food. Every Bite! To assess it, and my feelings about it! It may even help me relive some of my memories growing up - whether directly or indirectly associated to the meal!
